What you will learn

  1. Deflect a defender with check

    Intermediate · 8 min

The black queen is protected. A direct capture may not be enough: look for a move that forces its defender off the diagonal.

  2. Do not recapture automatically

    Toward 1800 · 8 min

Exchanges on the c-file can distract you from the knight. Before recapturing, check whether a checking move saves another piece.

  3. Open a line with tempo

    Intermediate · 8 min

Your bishop blocks a line from your queen. Moving it with check gains a tempo to exploit the opened line.

  4. Remove the defender and count

    Toward 1800 · 8 min

The white knight supports e2. A sequence of exchanges can remove that defender and expose a rook to your queen.
