What you will learn

  1. Seal the corner

    Intermediate · 8 min

The black king has little space. A rook can draw a defender away and leave the decisive check to the knight.

  2. Coordinate queen and bishop

    Intermediate · 8 min

The black king is exposed. The first check may force a block that changes which piece controls its escape squares.

  3. Deflect a defending rook

    Toward 1800 · 8 min

The king is boxed in beside its rook. Look for a sacrifice that removes a pawn and displaces the rook before entering the eighth rank.

  4. Attract a defender and open the entry

    Toward 1800 · 8 min

Your rook and queen can coordinate against f7 and g6. Before sacrificing, calculate where the king will stand after the second check.
