What you will learn

  1. Open a route for the king

    Intermediate · 8 min

There is tension between the central pawns and a black h4 pawn within your king’s reach. Calculate the checking exchange before starting the route.

  2. The king clears a path for the pawn

    Intermediate · 8 min

Pushing a passed pawn is not always the first step. The king must control the squares the opponent will use to stop it.

  3. Win the rook and restrain the pawns

    Toward 1800 · 8 min

The black king and rook share a rank. You can exploit that alignment, but the black pawns will still create threats.

  4. Attack and stop promotion

    Toward 1800 · 8 min

Your a-pawn is close to promotion, but so is the opponent’s d-pawn. The rook can help yours and watch their pawn’s file.
