What you will learn

  1. Recapture and blockade

    Intermediate · 10 min

White’s d4 pawn has no neighbouring pawns. Recapturing with the knight places a piece directly in front of it and blocks its advance.

  2. Exchange the blockader and reassess

    Toward 1800 · 10 min

You can exchange the blockading knight. Recapturing with the e-pawn transforms the position: both sides now have an isolated d-pawn.

  3. Liquidate the isolated pawn without forgetting the king

    Toward 1800 · 10 min

In this teaching endgame, d5 allows your isolated pawn to trade for the e-pawn. Your rook becomes active and h3 gives your king an escape.
